Columbia University's Rocco B Commisso Soccer Stadium hosted Winter Cup 2020 on Saturday, January 11th, where 12 teams battled it our for the coveted champion's trophy!
Our Division 1 roster was stacked with incredibly talented teams: TD Securities, Société Générale, Deloitte, Capital Dynamics, Credit Suisse, and Columbia's Alumni Soccer Team. The competition was fierce, but full of fair play!
Each team played four games before Société Générale, Columbia, TD Securities, and Capital Dynamics moved onto the semi-finals.
After two gripping games, Columbia's Alumni Soccer Team was left to face the two-year reigning Winter Cup Champion Société Générale.
The scene was set by the poet-athletes of Inwood's PS 98 and Harlem's PS 125, who performed their 2019 Poetry SLAM original poems for the crowd. The excitement paved the way for a 5-2 victory for Columbia's Alumni Soccer Team and they were crowned the Winter Cup 2020 Division 1 Champions!
As the Division 1 finals began, our Division 2 teams were just getting started! Grant Thornton, HBO, IPC, Blackstone, Capital One, and FactSet played four games and set out to vie for the top spot.
After HBO and Blackstone beat out Grant Thornton and IPC in the semi-final, they battled it out on the field for the Division 2 Champions trophy. Blackstone proved victorious over HBO with a final score of 3-0!
Our best Winter Cup yet would not have happened if not for the incredible staff and volunteers who acted as referees, field marshals, photographers, ran the registration tables, and ensured that our 200 players had food and water throughout the day.
A special thank you to PS 98 and PS 125, whose presence added such a special tone to the day and allowed our corporate athletes to see America SCORES New York in action!
Finally, a massive thank you to our sponsors who set incredible examples of fair play for our poet-athletes and raised almost $30,000 for our program. We can't wait to see you for SCORES Cup in Summer 2020!
